Movie Review Monday #25: The People Under the Stairs

On Halloween, Jeff, Shep, Arabella, Eiley and I decided to watch a scary movie. We went through the list of movies on demand several times, looking up scores on Rotten Tomatoes and debating what would be best. My top choice was The Boogeyman starring Barry Watson and Emily Deschanel because I like them both, Shep leaned toward The Pledge with Jack Nicholson because it had good reviews. And then we ended up watching The People Under the Stairs because it looked kind of scary and extremely cheesy.

It was mostly just cheesy.

Things:
1. This film was made in 1991. I would have guessed 80s, but close enough. The synthesized soundtrack was epic.
2. It starred Jesse from Mighty Ducks and Claire Danes' Messed Up BFF from My So-Called Life. They were obviously excellent actors.
3. Spoiler alert: A dog dies. He's a killer, and we're supposed to be happy that he dies, but dogs can be tamed after removal from a psychopathic owner, so I was a little upset that they offed him.
Awwww.
4. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but it seriously looked like they had two different actors for the male villain. He looked completely different in the beginning versus the final few scenes. It was weird. And I'm not crazy - Shep noticed it too.
5. Okay, those are the only comments I have because, to be honest, I was in another room feeding Eiley for the first 15 minutes, and then Arab and I were chatting through most of the rest of the film. I'm pretty sure this was a quality cheesy horror flick though - along the lines of Poltergeist or Halloween. Jeff certainly jumped a couple of times.

In conclusion, I give this half a claw up for any night of the year, and one and a half claws up for a Halloween night.
