Snapshot Saturday #13: whose pants are these anyway?

People often ask me what type of photo equipment I use and recommend. This shot was taken with my dinky old cellphone. Ok - not a masterpiece, but what a quirky sight to run across while walking around the Cal State East Bay campus?! I wish I knew who to credit for this creative art piece - if anyone knows, do tell! Also - points to anyone who can identify the post title reference.

UPDATE (5/22/12): Thanks to an anonymous commenter who tipped me off to the name of the artist of this installation, Ali Sharifi. Here's an article about the piece. I love learning the the meaning and significance behind this, to know that it is not just quirky, it is also insightful and purposeful. Thanks commenter, and thanks Ali!

When has a piece of public art caught you off guard and brightened up your day?

Snapshot Saturday #30 Finale

I was given the idea for this shot by my sister. Her father lifts up my little angle. Precious. What I can't get over is the tongue. That pretty much captures the adorable playfulness of their relationship.

And this, my Lobster friends, concludes Snapshot Saturdays. For the few of you who viewed them regularly, thank you! I hope you enjoyed them. I will find another way to share my photography on the blog, but 30 seems like a good note to end on. Ciao!

Snapshot Saturday #27 Life Cycle

This is a plant I have not taken great care of, but that continues to regenerate flowers for me nonetheless. I was struck by the full life cycle visible in this one moment, the one flower blooming beautifully, the other flower withering behind it, and a new bud just about to burst open just below.

ZoZo Photo

Perhaps, if you have been following Long Distance Lobsters for a while, and you are one of the few that checks us out on the weekends, you might have noticed a series of photos I've posted, starting with this one.

Snapshot Saturdays are soon coming to a close, and as they wind down, I want to pull together some of my favorites.

You can see the complete collection here. I've also posted a few photo shoots I've had fun with lately, like these:

The Zoo parts One and Two

and

Sofia at the coast with her grandparents [Pacific that is], and this week I posted a series with her on the other coast.

I find great joy in writing for this blog and also in capturing connections through photography. So while Snapshot Saturdays are going to give way to a new weekend tradition, my photography is hopefully going to find ways to grow elsewhere. For one, I am going to start offering my portrait services. You can help me out by liking ZoZo Photo on facebook or by telling any friends you might have in the MidCoast Maine area. Thanks for giving me an outlet for my art, Lobsters!

Snapshot Saturday #12: feets

Has it been long enough since a Saturday Snapshot was of my baby girl? I promise I try to aim my camera at other things, but it's real hard. Ever since she was born I've been astounded at how long her feet are. Also, I think Jack Johnson looked into the future to see this picture to find the inspiration for the song title "bubbly toes." Lastly, I'm a big fan of shallow depth of field.

What are some of your favorite photography effects or elements?

Snapshot Saturday #11: sweet mischief

I love this shot for so many reasons: the lighting, the warmth, the tenderness with which my sister is holding my child, and Sofia's little expression.

When have you visually witnessed the love between two people that has warmed your heart?

Snapshot Saturday #10: a little fuzzy

Again, some classy cell phone photography. I do like that it's sunrise that is a bit out of focus, as I'm sure my mind was at this time of day.

At what time of day are you most prone to inspiration?

Snapshot Saturday #7: . . . like the blue cheese

I love trees. Doesn't the rolling topography in the background frame the tree's shape beautifully? This shot was taken on a hike at Point Reyes. Just beyond this hill is the Pacific Ocean.

What settings in nature do you find to be most peaceful?

Snapshot Saturday #6: quack

Points to the person who can identify the children's book this sculpture commemorates. Double points if you can identify the location of the shot. This represents the very first book I read on my own. I took the shot when we were on the verge of trying to get pregnant and trying to figure out where in the country we were going to live ~ pretty appropriate to this story! There's a lot of emotion wrapped up in this image for me!

What is a childhood book that holds significance for you, and why?

Snapshot Saturday #4: mossy

I enjoy the collection of shapes and textures that this image captures. It makes me feel both peaceful and intrigued, like a proper dose of caffeine.

Can anyone identify where this was taken?

Snapshot Saturday #3: the shot that started it all

Sophomore year of college. First photography class. Assignment: portraits. I asked my buddy, Nate, if I could use him as a subject. Not only did I get an enthusiastic "sure," but also, he brought along a whole group of friends. I told them to gather up some props and come to the Armington lawn. One by one they sat awkwardly for me while I danced around the polite sphere of personal space. Jon used someone's guitar as a prop, but held it backwards - not knowing any better, making for some comical shots. Then you sat down.

You grabbed the same guitar. Not only did you know how to hold it, you knew how to play. You began to mess around with some little jazzy improv-y chord progressions. I lost site of the sphere of personal space all together. You drew me in and I was entranced. I don't think I even realized what I was doing. I've always wondered what you were thinking as my lens got right up in your face.

Later that evening, I spent a few hours alone in the dark room. That's when it really hit me. As the shot of you developed and I saw that image coming into view in that red light, a powerful, visceral rush of excitement/butterflies/awe/joy rushed over me. Bam! It was like I got hit by a truck that was my-intense-crush-on-you. Full on twitter-pated.

You looked so mysterious. I wanted to discover what that mystery was all about. I needed any excuse to see you again as soon as possible. I rushed down the hill to your dorm, only to find your room darkened with multiple girls snuggled up on your couch. But you weren't on that couch. You were on the bunk above them, from which you jumped down faster than I could finish knocking on your door. I was almost too overwhelmed and nervous to know what to say. "Uh, I finished developing the photos. It took a few tries to get it quite right for the assignment. I thought your mom might want some pictures of you or something." And she knew right away. On your next visit home, when you handed her those prints, she knew better than even I did how completely smitten I was with you. She could see it in the shot. Smart lady.

Here we are. Six years ago today, we got married.

I still love this shot.

I love that I got to capture and preserve the exact moment that my heart fell in love with you.

I love that I'm still enthralled with discovering your mystery.

I love that the power with which those feelings hit me as your image developed was just the smallest glimpse of the way I feel about you today, as if our love is ever-developing and coming more fully into view.

I love you, Manny.

Happy Anniversary my dear husband.

Snapshot Saturday #2: everything's bigger in Texas

There's nothing like a Texas sunset. All that flat expanse seems so boring in the day time, but it inspires the dusk like some kind of miracle.

What is your favorite time of day and why?

Snapshot Saturday #1: cup runneth over

For me, photography is about my love for something welling up so much that I have to capture it or I'll explode. So to kick off our weekly Snapshot Saturdays, I'm starting on a more personal note by sharing a shot of two of the things that most make the cup that is my heart runneth over: my husband and my daughter.

How do you express yourself or react when your heart wells up with joy over something you witness?
