Snapshot Saturday #18: descend

I'm so drawn to the simple clean lines and the gradation of light that even a dull stairway can provide. The fact that Sofia always got very quite and calm here also caused me to pause and pay attention to what might be fascinating her so much.

Stairways seem to lend themselves very naturally to symbolism, what does an image like this represent for you?

Snapshot Saturday #17: Snail

Out for a walk with my husband and baby, we almost stumbled upon this snail trying to climb some stairs in our parking lot. I crouched down for some rapid fire shots, which at first I feared would be boring, but then was captured by how quickly it was moving and using his little antennae to find his way. I feel like you can enjoy even more of his tiny exploration by watching his shadow progress alongside him. Good thing we took things a little slow on this particular afternoon.

Snapshot Saturday 16: yellow [brick] road

I like this shot for its shallow depth of field, and for the way the composition leads your eye from one corner to another, like a little path. I also enjoy how beautiful such humble little flowers can look. These are just ground cover surrounding a park. Simple ground cover, but so sunny and sweet.

Do you know people like that? Delightful, beautiful people placed in ordinary places? Someone charming at the DMV, a kind garbage collector, a funny accountant? Little rays of sunshine in places you weren't expecting to find joy? Tell me about someone you've witnessed like that.

Snapshot Saturday #15: just dandy

Oh Lobsters, if only you could have seen me taking these photos. Please picture: woman walking down the sidewalk, slows to a stop, crouches down with phone pointed at the grass, leans over a bit, is now fully on her side scooting around, rolling a bit to get the right angle. Now, add in the fact that she has a baby strapped to her chest and is trying to work her camera phone around the head that sits awkwardly below her chin. Who is thinking to themselves right now, "I've fallen and I can't get up" because I'm sure that thought crossed the mind of one or two passers-by, though no one stopped to help so it must have looked more weird than disconcerting. As I strode through the crosswalk in the background, I was thinking to myself, "what a waste, I didn't even get a decent shot. I looked a fool for nothing." But as I downloaded the pictures later, my husband said, "pretty" - so I took a closer look and decided I did actually like one or two [there were several more that did not make the cut]. At least I got what I was after. I like how these two shots capture different temperatures of the same image.

Have you ever powered through a publicly embarrassing moment to get something you were after? Do tell!

Snapshot Saturday #14: lil Sis

This is my little sister, Lauren. I always have to emphasize the "little" because she's five inches taller than me so I always have to work extra hard to assure people that I'm older. In this pic, she is at what she considers her worst. Not bad for her worst, eh? I love how dynamic her hair is, the way the light from the window warms her whole face, the fact that at this time, she is playing on here iPhone (which is what she spends most of her spare time doing) and doesn't realize I'm photographing her. My favorite part is the eyebrow.

Do you have siblings that live far away from you? How do your nurture your relationship to stay close?

Snapshot Saturday #9: Staircase

Next week, I'll say more about where these shots were taken. Stay tuned!

In the mean time, I'll just say I enjoy these shots for the geometry and the light. I also love the little touch of humanity sprinkled in oh so subtly.

Other than just being a Snapshot Saturday, today is also my parent's wedding anniversary. Over three decades of unyielding commitment for each other. You two deserve to be celebrated! So, it is a very small gesture, but I dedicate this Snapshot Saturday to you! I love you Mom and Dad!

Snapshot Saturday #8: little hobbit

That would be my Sofia, hiding all cozy-like in her mobi wrap. I'm a big advocate of baby wearing by the way! Shots of her in this wrap always make me think of little hobbits trying to hide from the Eye of Sauron.

What race of creature would you like to be in Lord of the Rings and why?

PS: today is Emily's official due date. Everyone please pray for a healthy delivery!

Snapshot Saturday #5: white flowers mini-series

For the second half of my pregnancy and the first few months of Sofia's life, nearly every day, I've taken the same walk in the same park. The park has lots to offer to keep me interested, but it is still a fun exercise to see something beautiful in what has become common and routine. Being spring time in San Diego doesn't hurt with that project, as new flowers in bloom can be easily inspiring. This mini-series started off a little rocky, but once I found my groove I managed to get a few shots I like.

Have you "stopped to smell the roses" lately? Did it pay off?
